Artist Agnes Martin – 'Beauty is in Your Mind' | TateShots
Agnes' Beauty is in Your Mind explains that Agnes Martin paints in all abstract style, she does this because she said that she has always thought beauty has always been from the mind. I do find more beauty in this work rather than chaos because each line and row of paint is very carefully placed and the paint is applied symmetrical. Martin's brush work is very light and is not detectible , her composition is organized as well she has the colors of the lines repeating in a symmetrical way. With her work being abstract it really relies on the audience to determine what is happening on this canvas. And with that Martin really has completed her goal of Beauty taking place in your mind. Personally I enjoyed this work of art because with no distinct form or meaning behind it, this gives a degree of freedom in what the purpose or how the colors are interpreted. Also Martin uses pastel colors, I'm not sure why but I think she wanted to do this to make it easier on the eyes and not have very stark and dark colors. The pastel colors that Agnes has chosen really brings out a happier mood.
Cai Guo-Qiang "Power"
This article is about Cai Quo-Qiang, and his unique medium of using a variety of explosives. I find this really interesting because this is something that is dangerous not only to the artist but also anyone else involved. Cai places the explosive powder down in patterns and and cover it up with cardboard and rocks and then he would ignite the explosives and the residue from the explosive powder leaves what Cai has intended it to, but sometimes it is a hit or miss. This image below is an example of what Cai Quo-Qiang's work would look like, this to me looks like an abstract dragon. Cai was also talking about how most of his work relates to his cultural past. I found a lot of beauty in his work, because of how he relates his work back to his cultural past and also with the uniqueness of the medium.
How loss helped one artist find beauty in imperfection | Alyssa Monks
This is a Ted talk from Alyssa Monks, in the beginning of this Alyssa gives some background to her starting in art, and about her family. Alyssa grew up the youngest of 8, 6 of which were brothers so she felt that she had to follow rules and stay in line which is why she started to create art so that she would be able to escape and create her own rules. Her mom would take her to art classes and even join her in some and this is how they would bond together. Eventually they would bond through their daily routines of Alyssa taking care of her mother during her cancer, Alyssa would eventually lose her mother to Cancer. She eventually found beauty in the loss and would continue to do her work again. I found more beauty in Alyssa's work rather than chaos, even though the composition of the foreground and the painting itself looks chaotic at first, to me it seems as it is peaceful and the painting composition is balanced the lines of water moving on the left side are closer together than the right side where all the lines are spread out and have the same level of busy on both sides. I also found beauty in the reason why she started to do art and why she would be drawn to do so. The color palate and the subject matter in the paintings are realism elements and natural lighting and colors, it seems as if you would be able to step into the painting.
Marcel Dzama: Organizing Chaos
I found Marcel Dzama's work to be both beautiful and chaotic, I found this because the work itself is beautifully crafted and done. While the subject matter is random and is just whatever comes to Dzama's mind and unfiltered is the chaotic part of this work, I did really enjoy this part because understanding people's mindset is something that has always been interesting to me. Dzama made a comment in his video that after Sandy Hook and the shooting in Florida that he actually stopped including guns in his artwork for a little while, and then brought them back when Trump was in office kind of symbolism. I also found that his color choice was interesting as well, most of the color in his art work was blue or navy blue and the rest of the colors in Marcel's artwork are colors like brown and white.
Matthew Barney "Consumption"
I reviewed Matthew Barney's video, I found the artwork that he was doing mostly chaotic and not as much beauty. The chaos that I found in his work was mostly due to the special effects makeup that he applied to the horse, he would apply the make up to the horses and make them look undead/zombie horses. Matthew would put a jacket on the horses first and then would apply the makeup to the jacket afterward, this way the horses would not have the makeup on them and cleaning up would be easy as well. The only beauty I found in this was the craft of it as well as the realism put in, this is exactly what I imagined a zombie horse to look like. From what I watched and learned about it seems like after all of the effect makeup was applied Matthew or someone else would ride around with these horses. Matthew sometimes would also apply this style of makeup to himself as well. I have been interested in special effects so seeing how this would apply to animals also was very interesting.
